Fort Meade History
Fort Meade is located in beautiful Anne Arundel County Maryland about a 30 minute drive to both Baltimore MD and Washington DC. The base was originally established in 1917 as a 19,000 acre training facility known as “Camp Annapolis Junction”. Fort Meade got its new name in 1929 in honor of famous Union Army General George G. Meade. (PHOTO HERE)
Since then, the base has experienced quite an evolution including uses as a basic training post and a prisoner of war camp. But Fort Meade really began to take shape in the 1950's when it became the headquarters for the National Security Agency or NSA. Prior to that the communities around the base, which include Severn, Odenton, and Gambrills were just tiny wooded dots on the map with not a lot of developed areas.
As Fort Meade and NSA grew, so did the surrounding housing communities. Beginning in the mid-60's world renowned homebuilder Levitt & Sons (who are still in business today) was introducing the concept of planned community subdivisions. Levitt focused their real estate development efforts in part on new construction homes in Bowie and Crofton Maryland. Their goal was to provide affordable housing to the growing number of homebuyer's working at Fort Meade and in Baltimore and Washington. As a testament to the quality of their construction and the neighborhood design, these homes are not only still around, they have become some of the most popular communities in the Fort Meade area.
Around the same time, the Rouse Company was planning the much larger undertaking of building a complete city. The result was Columbia Maryland. Columbia, like Crofton and Bowie, is a very popular housing option for Fort Meade employees. And they are now a rich combination of old and new homes, single family homes, townhomes and condominiums along with plenty of apartment and rental home options.
Fort Meade was scheduled to close in the 1990's but remained active almost solely in support of NSA. Now the base continues to thrive and grow with new tenants that include the Environmental Protection Agency, Defense Information School, Defense Courier Service and the prestigious Army field band.
In 2007 and beyond, we’re now looking forward to BRAC and it’s impact on Fort Meade. What’s BRAC you ask? The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process aka BRAC will bring even more activities to the Fort Meade between 2007 and 2011 including Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). BRAC is expected to bring over 5,000 direct on base jobs and an estimated influx of government contract jobs and supporting infrastructure of over 10,000. As Fort Meade has evolved, so has on-base housing, which varies
in style from older town homes to newer garage townhomes and even single-family homes. In 2002 Fort Meade was chosen as one of four pilot sites to convert to private management of their housing. All of the housing has, or is expected to receive updating before 2012. As part of the privatization, all base housing is now managed by Picerne Military Housing. Base housing on Fort Meade remains relatively easy to obtain and is even available to military retirees and Department of Defense employees. If it is imperative that you do not spend more than your BAQ/BAH for your home near Fort Meade this is an option you'll want to explore.
Many military members and government employees assigned to Fort Meade opt to live off post for a variety of reasons. And that's where we come in. First, you'll need to know that living off post will very likely exceed your basic housing allowance. But there are benefits too, and for some we know it's the only option. Because Fort Meade is surrounded by dozens of cities and three different counties, it can be overwhelming to newcomers. We invite you to view our relocation information at [Fort Meade info]. Based on our experience, the communities that attract the largest number of homebuyers and home renters from Fort Meade include Severn, Odenton, Gambrills, Crofton, Piney Orchard, Severna Park, Arnold, Columbia, and Ellicott City.
